We first came across Dr Suhayl Essa on stage, mid-set, asking one of our dentist colleagues in the audience whether she was a real doctor. So we invited him on and looked up his HPCSA registration on air. Only fair.

His story starts in Sydenham, Durban, where he was raised by his grandparents. Shadowing his grandfather, anaesthetist and anti-apartheid activist Dr Farouk Meer, in theatre in Grade 11 turned medicine into a plan. He started Durban High School in the bottom class and finished with straight As, and a Wits acceptance that very nearly didn't arrive.

Then comedy. A year watching alone at Kitcheners in Braamfontein before anyone suggested he try it. Two years on stage before he could look an audience in the eye. Three before anyone paid him more than a plate of food.

He left his job at the end of 2019 to go all in on stand-up, and three months later the country locked down. Back in an emergency department and touring on alternate weekends, he burnt out. After his grandfather died he tried again, with anaesthesia in Cape Town, before making a decision his family struggled to understand: he walked away.

We get into why, and what came next: comedy, a men's health telehealth practice started with friends from res, and learning property from a mentor he met at the gym. The burnout, as he sees it, came less from the hours than from turning something he loved into a business. And yet, asked whether he'd study medicine again, he doesn't hesitate.
